A Reflection on Reflection
This collage looks at composition. In particular it was a compositional exercise. For me as an artist, a compositional exercise is like an athlete doing cardio. Composition is my cardio.
What we have here is an examination of space and perspective, created primarily in this case with the three grounds: background, middle ground, foreground. Those three zones are exaggerated in this composition to create a maximum expression of the illusion of space.
My goal — always the prima facie goal with all my work — is to create a visually interesting image or object. That’s the first goal, the first fact, and then everything else — the subject, the idea, the message — moves from that.
This piece, being an exercise in composition, my cardio, is focusing on the concept of space being created through light. The fact that we can see the figures on a ground is because the figures contained within the ground are all ambient or reflective of light. And the word reflection, of course, can also mean to think, to meditate, to ponder. Likewise, my idea for a title, if I were to give it one, is something a little cheesy, but it gets the idea: Reflecting on Reflection. Or Reflections of Reflection. I think I like that one better.
I hope everyone enjoys this digital collage, because in the end, my goal is to create a visually interesting image or object, whether or not you like it.
