Ode to Hot Dogs
I was 11 when homosexuality was declassified as a mental illness. I was 42 when it was decriminalized in the United States. And I was 53 when gay marriage was legalized here. It’s been a long road, with a lot of ups and downs — but there’s one thing that’s gotten me through it all: hot dogs.
I love hot dogs. Long ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones. I love hot dogs.
So, in honor of National Hot Dog Day — which technically happened on July 15th this year, and yes, I’m a little late — here’s my very belated, very sincere celebration. In my world, every day is hot dog day.
First, a little art to set the mood: a hot dog stand, two men sharing a dawg, and a bit of whimsy floating in the background.
Then, lunch. Hot dogs of course, with sauerkraut and mustard, chili and beans, and stealth pickles to pile sky-high.
And finally, a little reminder of the holiday that started it all — belated, but no less enthusiastic.
So here’s to hot dogs, the NYC Met Hot Dog Stand, and not taking life too seriously.
